When?

Saturday 20th Feb 2021 10.30am – 3.30pm

Where?
Down by the river: Palmerston North
Head to the new cycle bridge (He Ara Kotahi)
then walk back towards Fitzherbert Ave along the river & you’ll find us after a short walk.
We’ll be ‘in- situ’ where the play will be staged, with a sign.

What?
Using Natural resources (vines, willow etc) we’ll make ‘props’ for use in the production of ‘Mid Summer Nights Dream’.

Why?
Come and get creative with guidance to help make a magical natural setting for this fabulous piece of theatre. Then come to the show which will be staged 4th -13th March 2021 and which is also free for the public to attend.

Drop in attendance welcome.
All hands welcome. And yes it is FREE!

Matariki 2020

It's time to gather for a Matariki harvest. Come out on the bus from Palmerston North (also pick up in Feilding available) to visit the Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre and see how we do what we do. It's willow harvest time, so we'll do a bit of that so you can see how we work with the willow we use in so many of our city based activities, including the annual Lantern Parade. We'll enjoy a small bush walk in local Kaikawaka Reserve, and if time allows plant a few trees. 
Bus Trip Details:
On Wednesday July 15th 2020 the Bus will leave central Palmerston North 9.30am and return by 5pm. 
Please dress warmly with proper footwear. We are at 600m above sea level and it can be a bit chillier up here. 

We'll have tea coffee cake but please Byo your own lunch. There are no shops in Rangiwahia. 
 Places on the bus must be booked through REACT on 06 3282823. Please leave name and contact number so I can get back to you with details.

Thanks to Palmerston North City Environment Trust and PNCC for help funding the bus out here during the July holidays.
We will also be harvesting on Friday 17th July, but this will be by car share for those interested.

 REACT Bus Trip Saturday 13th July
 including annual Willow harvest. 
Thanks to Palmerston North City Environment Trust for funding a bus out here during the holidays. Come visit the centre and see how we do what we do, including helping with our annual willow harvest that we use in so many of our city based activities, including the annual Lantern Parade. Will include a small bush walk in local reserve. The hinau berry carpet is rather special at the moment.

Willow Hut Making at Ahimate 'Beach  Thursday 18th July
Using the willow we harvest during the bus trip to REACT, we will (re)plant willow huts down by the riverside at Ahimate Reserve.
We will be planting and forming small willow shelters to provide sunshade in the summer months just up from the 'beach'.
No experience required, just hands to help plants sticks and weave through structures.

Okoro Matariki bonfire Palmerston North July 6th down by the Manawatu River. Come join us for a massive Bonfire and Storytelling to welcome in the New Year.

We're delighted to have been invited by Wellington City Council to create some spectacular centrepieces for their upcoming Matariki celebrations: Nga Wai Piata - Streams of Light. We'll be very busy in the Factory in the next few weeks producing a stunning Whale, Stingray and more to Parade around the Wellington Waterfront and Whairepo Lagoon on Friday 21st June from 6pm.

Tiakitanga a Papatuanuku :  Care for Mother Earth
We're kicking off local activities in Palmerston North on Tuesday January 15th, based around the unbox in the Square.
A Day of activity and information about Climate Change. 
We'll be making flags from 10.30am for D-I-Y Demo-cracy, based around your hopes for Paptuanuku, Mother Earth, and positive actions for change. We'll be using crayon and dye mix for this, on old cotton offcasts.  
We'll also be weaving oversized eggs from natural products to be placed around Ahimate Park. This activity will happen from 2.30pm.
We'll have info about climate change, and people around to have conversations with about this topic.
This day is in association with Earth Strike and Extinction Rebellion Manawatu.

Oh what a busy year, here there and everywhere. Now all gigs, willow harvest and stripping done! Thankfully we've had a wonderful harvest for 2018.
We still welcome visitors to our base in Rangiwahia where we will be busy over Summer preparing for events in 2019 - confirmed to date:
Waitangi Day in Porirua Feb 6th, Newtown Street Festival Wellington March 3rd, International Women's Day Parade Palmy March 8th, Palmy Lantern Parade Sat 16th March and Workshops, and Cuba Dupa Festival Wellington March 30, 31.  
We will also be busy around Ahimate with our Natural Play implementation and are  also planning to roll out a new project for MAC in the Square, Palmy March 2nd: Cardboard Army!! Watch here for workshop dates and updates... 


Winter Months:  
We're off to Light Nelson July 6th - 12th to present 'Swimming upstream" - Our interpretation of Tuna (eels) and inanga (whitebait) and their challenging travels upstream to maturity. Made from Plastic Bottles - what was i thinking? 
Big News:
An exhibition about the Big Girl's Project at Wellington Museum from 19th July until 11th August, with activities and workshops in Celebration of Suffrage 125. We'll be making funky little Placard Lanterns, super easy and effective, for women to self- represent and shine a light on their rights in an "Illumination for Emancipation" Lantern Parade with the Big Girl's along Wellington Waterfront. 
August 11th Saturday 6pm from Wellington Museum. See you there!

Lit Bike Ride in Whanganui May 4th
Fabulous Community response with around 500 people turning up on the night.  Great organisation by Riah King-Wall with magical performances along the ride by various community groups.

We're very excited to be invited over to Whanganui to help locals build things for their Lit Night Ride along the river.
Public workshops are:
Friday 27th and Saturday 28th April from 9am - 3pm in the Old Farmers Building 131 Victoria Avenue, Whanganui.
We're also working with the whole of Mosstman School - 160 kids in one day!! and the local YMCA holiday programme

Pataka workshops January 29th - 31st 2018 
Daily 9.30am - 4pm    Come when you can  

We'll be making a Giant Taniwha Puppet and much more;  Wearable Kina – willow frame and tissue, decorated with tissue or fabric, Taniwha and fish head hats - cardboard, foam, and decoration, Tuna (eels) and fish ‘swimming’ – bamboo canes with redesigned plastic bottles, and other creatures found around Porirua harbour.
Bring a  plastic bottle if you want to make a handheld tuna (eel) puppet or bits of carboard (cereal boxes are good!) for headwear, if you can.

Waitangi Day 6th Feb
We'll be making on-site all day, and also Parading with all the Taniwhas and creatures made over the preceeding weeks. It's going to be MASSIVE!!

a Cycle ride with Sparkle:  October 20th 7pm

​Come join us for the Spakliest and most fun bike ride Palmy has ever seen. 
Light up your bike and join us for a Spectacular but easy ride around our city. 
Special floats by REACT and Lucid Dream Bike Wellington will form centrepeices for city inhabitants to join
​as we bring lit colour to our streets and suburbs.
Bling your bike or bring a lantern to add to the fiesta in this family friendly outing as part of Envirofest 2017.
Meeting from 7pm under the Clocktower in the Square, with departure from 7.30pm.

Day Trip to REACT Sunday 18th June 2017

Come out and visit us by Bus!
A special day trip is planned for those wanting a day out in the countryside.
Come and see what we're all about. 
A Day trip to REACT base in Rangiwahia, with bus from Palmerston North leaving at 9:30am from outside i-site in the Square, returning by 4:30pm.
Pick up also available in Feilding opposite Train station, but this must be prearranged. 

Amongst other things, we will introduce you to how we grow our own resources: willow for lanterns and sculptures, veg for food, plus a short bushwalk in one of the neighbouring reserves. 
​As it is harvest time for the willow, we will also have the opportunity to coppice (chop) some of the withies that we use for our sculptural and creative activities. See first hand how this is a renewable resource.

We hope this will be an enjoyable and educational day out in the countryside where visitors will gain further understanding of what we do, how and why we do it. 
Seats on the bus must be booked through Eventfinda.  Seating limited to 50 people. Be in quick!
No charge but please bring your own packed lunch. Tea & coffee will be provided. 
Please wear comfortable and warm clothes. Bring a rain coat just in case.

As well as showing you how we grow the willow, and having a go at stripping the bark off, We'll be giving the tiger some stripes and tissueing the Rooster for
this years Lantern Parade in Palmy in March. 
We will also have a short guided walk through a local peice of native reserve,
and you can relax and enjoy just being out of town for the day.

We are delighted to once again be able to offer Lantern workshops to schools, groups and institutions in the PNCC area in the lead up to the Community Lantern Parade March 3rd 2017           3 workshops are up for grabs.

Have a crafty Christmas with REACT, and learn to create your own Christmas presents and wrapping from items destined for the recycling bin in your own home!

Reuse and recycle common household rubbish, and learn how to make Christmas cracker wrappers and gifts, such as board games, picture frames, and cards. 

REACT will supply most of the material needed, but to discover just how many things can be repurposed from your own home, it's advisable to bring two clean, equally sized cans to make a cracker.

Day Trip to REACT

Thanks to PNCET and funding through Envirofest 2016, there will be a bus trip to REACT
to see all we do, how we do it , and why. 
Come out to beautiful surrounds of Rangiwahia, see the willow growing, have a go at Stripping,
and take a small guided bush walk in one of our local reserves.

Kowhai Corridor for Kereru

Conservation Week 2016 Planting day will be Sunday September 18th.
From 10am at REACT base in Rangwahia. Bring gumboots and work clothes. Lunch provided.
We will be getting all the wonderful Kowhai, Cabbage Trees, flaxes and more into the ground.
These plants were provided under the Horizons Community Grant. 
The Kereru corridor is phase 2 in our longterm regeneration plan.

Light Nelson: the COMRADE-SHIP

Whats the Comrade-Ship?
Heroic actions of the past and present. 
Throwing a lifeline is what makes the difference.
We honour Huria Matenga and whanau during the sinking of the Delaware in 1863, and those that save and help the refugees arriving by boat in Europe currently. 
We remember the ghosts of those who don't make it.

REACT Project for Light Nelson 2016 - 'Comrade-Ship'
Created at NMIT, Nelson the week preceeding the event. Hands on with creation were:  Eris Newson, Radinka Maru, Caitlin Haywood, Eleanor Greer, Jim Richards and Bridgette Murphy.
Towed by bike, the 'Comrade-Ship' sailed the streets during the Light Nelson event July 8th - 12th 2016, then took the Ferry to ride the Wellington Waterfront as part of Lucid Dream Bike Festival July 16th. 2016.

Annual Harvest of our Willow June 25th and 26th 2016

What: Using Secateurs we will be undertaking our annual harvest of willow rods from our coppicing beds. 
This is the willow we use for Lanterns, Giant Puppets, Poppy making etc. 
Come and be involved in its harvest and see how it is such a sustainable resource.
Easy, lightweight work. BYO secuateurs and gloves if you can. Dress warmly for work.
When: Saturday 25th June and Sunday 26th June 2016 10am - 3.30pm
Lunch and refreshments provided.
Where: Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre

Cuba Dupa Festival March 19th and 20th Cuba Street Wellington
We will be transforming an inner city car park into a 'pop up' Urban Garden with the community before and during the event.

BLOOMING CUBA DUPA
Come and get involved in the creation of a fabulous pop-up Urban Garden for the Cuba Dupa Festival.
Using renewable, reuse and low impact resources we will be creating Beautiful blooms, bugs and vines for the Leeds Street carpark transformation.
No experience required. Bring your enthusiasm to Thistle Hall between 10 and 3pm.

FLY YOUR FLAG WITH JUNK & DISORDERLY

Tuesday 22nd April 10.30am – 3.30 pm Outside i-site in the Square, Palmerston North.

Make your Flag - it could be for the country, your family, or for your very own kingdom.
Using old fabrics cut up and crayon/dye options for littlies, 

We will be out side i-site in the Square for a day long creative
 activity for any to drop in and create their own Flag to take home. 
Maybe we'll find a new flag for Aotearoa!
All materials provided, with Guidance from the Junk and Disorderly crew at REACT.
Funded by Creative Communities and PNCC, with donations welcome.
Come and have some fun in the Square these school holidays.


WORKDAY AT REACT 
Come and join us on May 3rd 2014 for a work day!
Starting from 9.30 all and any are welcome to come and roll their sleeves up. 
Soup and bread lunch provided for workers.
Aim is to clear old wood/weeds for future 'Taniwha' planting along stream bed. 
With wood cleared and weather permitting, we'll make a bonfire for 
a slightly late Beltane celebration on Sat night. 
Planting possible with help from Horizons and will take place in June.

Junk & Disorderly Sundays at Te Manawa
Creative fun for Families - 1-4pm
Dates for 2013: August 18th, September 22nd, and November 3rd.

3 hour drop in session featuring a project the family can create collaboratively and which are open to all the public,
all workshops are designed as environmentally sustainable, and will allow families to create together with all resources provided,
and they are free, which seems to be the crux for many families in our region at this time.  More details below.

The Junk & Disorderly crew from REACT will be filling the space with spring goodness. 
Create a beautiful bloom from recycled materials to decorate your place. 
All materials supplied fro kids and families to make their own stunning display. 

Headliner Challenge  Sunday 3rd  November at Te Manawa 1-4pm

In celebration of Wearable Arts we'll be throwing down our recycled gauntlet and hoping families take up the challenge.
What kind of outfit could you make in an hour? 
Pick a member of the family as a model then go for it with our recycled materials and tools provided
We're not usually competitive but there'll be small prizes for outstanding creations.

Community Coppicing - Harvest Days 2013

Come and experience the Joy of Coppicing and learn how we grow our own resources. 
Dress warmly for work and BYO secateurs if possible. Lunch provided.

This time of year rolls around pretty fast. Its now June and the leaves are still holding on so no dates confirmed as of yet. 
We imagine we will get into it late June/mid July so if you'd like to be involved give us a call on 06 3282823 or email [email protected] and we can let you know when the dates are decided. 
We may hire a bus to come up from Palmy for those who are carless if there is enough interest.

Giants invade Palmerston North!

REACT will Be launching its new Graffiti and Mural Project at Art on Edge 4 in Palmerston North on the 22nd of September .React is happy to be collaborating with Te Manawa at this Event and invites all those wanting to help produce a community street artwork to come along between 1pm and 3pm.
Te Manawa and React will host Open workshops in Mural and Graffiti techniques for participants in October/November at the museum. There are also 5 free workshops for schools or institutions up for grabs .Expressions of interest by email to [email protected]

Evento wearable arts Tips and Techniques for entrants .Having held two Tips and Techniques workshops for new entrants and a Paper Play Session plus visits to schools we wish all entrants Best of Luck in getting outfits completed and ready.
 Junk and Disorderly are happy to hear from any schools interested in hosting a talk for students in regard to the Evento High school Wearable arts Competition - especially in neighbouring districts.

Activities Include:
Living Structures – Time to plant!
Imagine your playground with a living structure - it could be a Dome/ Igloo, Bower or Archway, a tunnel perhaps. Great for summer shade.
Plant a coppice bed at school for future project resources.
Junk Orchestra and Recycled Art workshops
Visits to REACT:
Willow stripping underway when the sap rises, usually Sept/October time
Come and learn about the wonder of willow as a sustainable resource, and strip willow to use for a future project, be it lanterns or sculpture.
Term 4 2013
Activities Include:
Giant Puppet making – Make a Great showing in Christmas Parades and School Fairs
Prop and Costume workshops, for your School Concert or Parade – from recycled resources and more.

Festival of cultures 2012 opening procession_

 We have recieved funding once again from PNCC local initiative fund to host ten workshops in the Palmerston North area .The workshops will be making lanterns and lit structures for the March 23rd event to be held in the square .
 We have been lucky enough to have been donated a work space to host open workshops for the public .Many thanks to downtown cinemas for their kind support.

Great day as break in the weather made for warm day in shelter of withies.Dry summer can be seen on the growth patterns. Cheers to locals Mary and Ben, and wwoofers Cat, Tom and Josh.
Harvesting continued over the next few weeks with help from Alix and Guiche and Hillary.
