Matariki 2020

It's time to gather for a Matariki harvest.
Come out on the bus from Palmerston North (also pick up in Feilding available) to visit the Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre and see how we do what we do.
It's willow harvest time, so we'll do a bit of that so you can see how we work with the willow we use in so many of our city based activities, including the annual Lantern Parade. We'll also enjoy a small bush walk in local Kaikawaka Reserve if you wish.
Bus Trip Details:
On Wednesday July 15th 2020 the Bus will leave central Palmerston North 9.30am and return by 5pm.
Please dress warmly with proper footwear. We are at 600m above sea level and it can be a bit chillier up here.

We'll have tea coffee cake but please Byo your own lunch. There are no shops in Rangiwahia.
Places on the bus must be booked through REACT on 06 3282823. Please leave name and contact number so I can get back to you with details.

Thanks to Palmerston North City Environment Trust and PNCC for help funding the bus out here during the July holidays.
We will also be harvesting on Friday 17th July, but this will be by car share for those interested.

Planting time! and Harvest time!
Thanks to funding from Horizons Regional Council for fencing and a plant grant,
the Taniwha will be rising from the ground.
With a view to bank stabilisation, erosion control, regenation and green corridor link up between local reserve, we decided to get a bit creative with it. From a Brids eye view, we are planting to acheive a Taniwha curling around the stream bed.
Thanks to Te Manawa Museum for helpers to plant July 25th.
Many more plants to get in the ground - if you want to come planting.....
And Harvest time for the willow. All and any hands welcome anytime its not raining
We welcome the Bhutenese community up in a couple of weeks time, to help harvest and for us to start the basket making skill sharing we have just trained for. Exciting!

Courses and Workdays - Learn by Doing

Picture
Community Harvest Days
Due to an extended summer followed by constant rain, locals have been harvesting furiously whenever weather allowed.
For this reason we have not called a communty harvest day as such this year, as when people travel out from town, we need to feel confident the weather will behave.
All the small willow has now been harvested with just the Giganteum to go. With the weather seemingly more reliable, come out and  take a chance.
Come and Experience the Joys of Coppicing.
Learn how we grow our own resources.
Dress warmly for work. BYO secateurs and gloves if possible. Wonderful donations of Secateurs from Fiskars have made the taste of multiple cuts so much easier. Our hands thank you Fiskars -see sponsors page for their story
Lunch provided. 10 - 3pm Best to phone before leaving town - to make sure we are here - 06 328 2823.
