EMMISSION FREE
CHRISTMAS PARADES

For a couple of years, we were lucky enough to have a city council
radical enough to promote an Emission Free Christmas Parade.
Our kind of concept, we got on board with local schools to create
Giants to wow the crowds, sustainably and imaginatively.

2011 and 2012 Photos

Thanks for all the fun! Successful schools over the 2 years
were St James, PNGHS, Our Lady of Lourdes, Ross Intermediate, Cloverlea,Tiritea, Parklands, and Awapuni Schools.
From 2013 this is an initiative we will no longer be running
in Palmerston North as the Christmas Parade has
sadly reverted to pumping out emmisions.
We loved it whilst it lasted ....

All creations were made to be paradeable.
With bamboo bike trailers developed by REACT
for the occasion, they are easy, light, reuse and made for motion.
Others were worn by use of backpack mounted inside.

Thanks to Awapuni School, Parklands School, Our Lady of Lourdes School,
Terrace End school and Carncot School for the wonderful ideas brought to life
for the first vehicle free Christmas parade for Palmerston North.

Riverdale School with Stevie from Minecraft 2012

Being wholly participant led in our Giant Making workshops, sometimes we
come into a surprise for ourselves as Tutors.
Riverdale School chose 'Stevie' from an exhaustive choices list compiled from
the kids ideas at the start of the day.
We had no idea who Stevie was, but he seemed very popular!

He's a main character in a computer game called 'Minecraft' that all the kids play.
Although he turned out to be a bit of a wind trap for Palmy Nth, we were amazed how
popular he was with the crowd - teens and older knew him and shouted their approval.
On the Pulse, Riverdale!

Ross Intermediate with Papa Smurf

When we arrive in the morning we never know what we'll make that day, apart from the fact it'll be a Giant.
It may take the kids a moment to realise they really can suggest anything they'd like to make massive
and it comes down to which is the most popular idea.
The kids can vote for as many things as they'd like, anything they'd be happy to make, not just one choice.
This ensures maximum pride in completion.

Papa Smurf turned out rather large -
the maximum size possible to fit under the Council Buildings on the Parade route. He was mounted on a moveable aliminium scaffolding  tower base, pushed by REACT volunteers.
