Our Charcoal
what's the story

Picture
Our Willow is grown and coppiced in Rangiwahia, Manawatū.
After harvest the willow rods (osiers) stored upright -butts down in water until October when the sap rises and can be stripped. We host volunteer days at Rangi beach to strip by hand. We also have a mechanical stripper to aid the amount of willow we process
Our willow is used for creative purposes such as Giant puppets, Lanterns and Living Structures See other pages.
When using the thick butt ends of the rods are too thick for small hands and ae cut off it was from these offcuts our willow charcoal originates

Our natural fired charcoal is cooked in the top of our domestic wood burner- and is made in small batches over winter with no additional energy used to cook.

Willow Charcoal
REACT- Rangiwahia Environmental arts centre is an incorporated society with
charitable status furthering the aims of sustainable practice and community
development.
To promote Environmental arts projects and community participation in visual arts.
To aid and assist communities in realizing their visions for their community event by
use of natural resources and reused items.

We grow and coppice Willow for use in creative projects. Such as lantern making and
Giant puppets.
During workshops we often end up with the butt end of the willow rods cut off to make
handling easier for small hands.
We also have some natural wastage at harvest time.

Whilst aiding Naga Tsutsutmi with his Totara Charcoal project. We started making
Charcoal drawing sticks from these offcuts.
Our Kaupapa is one of sustainable use of materials.
Our first Batches were made in the top of a Wood burning stove to use no extra energy
input to make our Charcoal.
We have now also made small Kiln Batches.
We continue to use both methods to reduce our environmental impacts.

As this charcoal is made from a natural source, there will be variations
between sticks. The sticks don’t contain any binder, so they will be dusty and
brittle in texture.
Our Packaging is also scrap and reuse materials.

Our projects require funding – to become more sustainable and less reliant on
Govt funders, the monies raised by selling products such as this willow
Charcoal help us to continue to offer free and low-cost workshops.

Please see our website for more information about other ways to assist
through volunteering or donations.
